Everyone has the same problem. You know you saved it somewhere. You just cannot find it. Here is what an AI second brain actually is, and what it takes to build one properly.
Most people hear "AI second brain" and picture something technical. It is not. It means giving an AI tool access to your own files, so instead of searching through folders you can just ask it a question and get an answer, in your own words, sourced from things you already wrote or saved.
"Summarise my blood test results." "Find that recipe I saved last month with the chickpeas." "What did my accountant say about the BAS deadline in that email from March." A second brain answers questions like that from your own material, not from the internet.
It is not a chatbot that knows everything. It does not go looking things up online unless you set it up to. It only knows what you have given it, which is the point. It will not make things up about your own documents the way a general AI tool sometimes does about the world, because the answer is sitting right there in the file you gave it.
Tools like Google NotebookLM already do this for free or close to it. You upload PDFs, notes, or paste in text, and you can ask questions against exactly that material. For one person with a folder of receipts, a stack of school notes, or a pile of instruction manuals, this is usually enough. No developer, no monthly bill beyond what you might already pay, no waiting.
If that is your situation, the honest answer is: use one of the free or cheap tools already built for this, and stop there.
The job changes when it stops being about you, and becomes about a team, a business, or private information you cannot put into someone else's tool. A few examples that come up:
Client or patient files. If the documents contain other people's private information, a general consumer tool is the wrong home for them. This needs proper access control and a clear answer about where the data sits, which is a genuine build.
A whole team needs the same answers. One person's NotebookLM notebook does not help five staff who all field the same customer question. That needs a shared system with permissions, so the wrong person cannot see the wrong file.
It has to plug into other systems. If the second brain needs to pull from your CRM, your project files and your inbox at once, and keep itself updated as those change, that is connected automation, not a single upload.
How much of this is genuinely private information, versus things you would not mind if a cloud tool saw. Who else needs access, and do they need different levels of it. Does the source material change constantly, or is it mostly a fixed pile you are building once. The cheaper answer is usually right if the material is yours alone and mostly static. The build is worth it once other people, other systems, or real privacy obligations are involved.
A personal second brain on your own files, done with existing free or subscription tools, costs nothing extra beyond what you might already pay for a chat assistant. A proper build, with access control, several users and a live connection to your other systems, usually sits in the setup scope band, a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on how many systems it has to talk to. Anything beyond that and you are usually looking at a genuine automation or specialist build.
